Summer Music

Mitch Leonard

If today's 65 and sunny weather is any indication, summer is right around the corner. Which means new music will be dropped, speakers will come up, and the patios of Minnesota will be packed. But the best thing about summer music is that there are so many different genres that work. From Hip Hop to Country, Indie to classic rock, there seems to be something about each one that just fits with summer. So, I have decided to go through each one, and pick some of my current favorites along with some artists to look out for.

As most of you reading this probably know, Drake recently dropped his new album, More Life. Although some people like to think he is over rated, this album is yet another testament to why he is in fact not over rated. From Sacrifices to Teenage Fever, and one of my good vibes favorites Passionfruit, Drake dropped this feel good album just in time for the sun to come out. But other than Drake, there is a lot of great Hip Hop that has been recently released or is set to release. Songs like Slide by Calvin Harris with Frank Ocean and Migos, Congratulations by Post Malone, and American Teen by Khalid are all great tracks that have been released. Also, look out for Albums or Singles from the likes of A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, and Jay-Z. They are all due for an upcoming album, and usually produce great songs.

Now I know this may not qualify as a true country music fan, but I usually only listen to it in the summer months. But, once it is nice out I really do love it!!! There is just something about country music, a group of friends, cold beer and the sun that go together perfectly. In fact, I keep a country playlist on my spotify that rarely gets touched until the temperature is over 50. But it is now in full swing, and the cobwebs have been dusted off. Some summer country classics include Beat This Summer by Brad Paisley, Pontoon by Little Big Town, Wagon Wheel & Alright by Darius Rucker, and practically any song by the Zac Brown Band. With some big names dropping albums this year, look out for new music from Dustin Lynch, Kelsea Ballerini, Zac Brown Band, and Brad Paisley.

Other Favorites

Some artists fall into my other category, and they are really versatile and rarely fall under one large genre. For instance, The Chainsmokers is one of my all time favorite summer artists, and you are sure to get a summer vibe song out of those two. Also, if you have ever seen the Apple headphone commercial, you know the song Down by Marian Hill, and what I love about this song is that is starts slow and has a really interesting beat drop, sure to get some head bobs along the way. And finally, you have to check out Quinn XCII if you have not already. Songs like Another day in Paradise and Stung are amazing summer songs.
