Best Brunch in the Cities

Written by Laura Beier

It’s well known that the Twin Cities are an epicenter for amazing food, and brunch is a trending weekend activity. Check out these top suggestions for great food and an aesthetic Sunday morning experience from a brunch enthusiast:

1. Birchwood Cafe

This farm-to-table establishment complete with vegan and vegetarian options is the most wholesome restaurant I’ve ever been to. Fresh roasted coffee, savory waffles, and an entire bakery and deli with organic treats are some of my favorite features, and the seating system of ordering first and then being assigned a table helps the perpetually-long line go fast. Each season entails a different menu, featuring handcrafted creations with in-season foods from farms in the area. Try the Quiche Lorraine, one of the only constant items on the menu.

2. Penny’s Cafe

Say what you will about this being a purely Instragrammable spot, but this hipster-filled high-end coffee shop offers great food options in addition to caffeinated concoctions. In the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Penny’s has sweet and savory crepes, homemade pastries, and a few salad options, providing a little something for everyone. Try the ham and gouda crepe and a latte with the signature almond date milk.

3. Corner Coffee

Stepping into the North Loop location of Corner Coffee (they now have two others in Uptown and Camden) is like walking into a relative’s living room. Mismatched furniture and a homey feel are complete with a mural of Minneapolis on the back wall and coffee cups as light fixtures. On Saturday mornings there’s a blues band that plays as you read the newspaper and sip your thoughtfully roasted coffee, or dive into a warm breakfast sandwich and catch up with friends. Try the vanilla latte made with real vanilla extract or the decadent breakfast croissant.

4. Black Waffle and Coffee Bar

Many will say it’s overrated but this small waffle and coffee shop in Como will always make my top list for breakfast, brunch, or signature Twin Cities spots in general. With gluten free, vegan, and make-your-own options, you can’t go wrong - but you may have to wait a while to sit down on the weekends. Try the Naughty Waffle, complete with berries and almond butter, or create your very own waffle topped high with whatever you want and plenty of whipped cream.

5. Hen House Eatery

Another downtown Minneapolis spot, this brunch spot offers locally sourced ingredients and serves breakfast all day, so it’s perfect for when you’ve had a long weekend and wake up at noon. Try one of the many savory egg or hash dishes, sweet cakes, or the infamous cinnamon rolls.
