Coming back to school for U of M students is a bundle of many emotions: nerves for classes, preparation for the anticipating cold, excitement for Gopher Game Days, and, finally, a countdown to Homecoming Week. With last year’s Homecoming Concert starting off with a bang with Jidenna, followed by the unbreakable Kesha, I was excited to hear this year’s line up. Let’s take an in depth look at not just what music these artists produce, but who they are, and how they came to be.

COIN

COIN is an American indie pop band formed in Nashville, Tennessee in 2012. The band consists of lead vocalists Chase Lawrence, drummer Ryan Winnen, lead guitarist Joe Memmel, and bass guitarist Zachary Dyke. In 2012, Chase Lawrence and Joe Memmel were students at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and sat next to each other in their music theory class. After Lawrence and Memmel decided they wanted to write music together, Ryan Winnen and Zachary Dyke were introduced through mutual friends.

In August of 2013, they released their single “Atlas” from their EP 1992. It was eventually re-recorded, along with their song “Time Machine”, and released on their debut album COIN.

In early 2015, COIN released their single “Run”. The song was hailed by Billboard as “new wave crash-course survivors” and gained a lot of positive reviews. Their self-titled debut album COIN was released that summer and was produced by Jay Joyce, who has produced many albums for artists like Little Big Town, Cage the Elephant, and Eric Church. They released their second album How Will You Never Know If You Never Try in April of 2017, with their song “Talk Too Much” as their first released single from that album. Currently, they’re on tour across America for their second album, including a stop by for our Homecoming Concert.

Although COIN is a new and upcoming indie band, they have huge potential to become an international sensation. Their music is fun and lighthearted with a funky beat. If you need a little motivation to get to class, they’re great to listen to while walking to campus.

Tinashe

Tinashe Jorgenson Kachingwe is an American singer-songwriter, dancer, actress, record producer, and former model. She began her entertainment career at a young age of three by acting and modeling.

In 2007, Tinashe created girl group The Stunners with her friends Marisol Esparza, Allie Gonino, Hayley Kiyoko, and Kelsey Sanders. In 2010, they released their single “Dancin’ Around The Truth” just before they were announced as the opening act for Justin Bieber's My World Tour. After the tour, the group started to work on their first album, but it was never released as the group broke up in 2011.

After The Stunners, Tinashe began pursuing her solo career. In 2014, Tinashe released her first debut album Aquarius, featuring her singles “2 On” and “All Hands on Deck”. She was also featured on Nick Jonas’s remix of “Jealous” in 2014. Tinashe also collaborate with Britney Spears on the song “Slumber Party” which was released in 2016. In March of 2017, she released a single titled “Flame” which is taken from her upcoming studio album Joyride.

With a catchy hip hop and R&B sound, Tinashe is a rising star gathering attention from all across America. Her tunes are guaranteed to make you get up and move.

Ty Dolla $ign

Tyrone William Griffin Jr., known as Ty Dolla Sign, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Ty’s father, Tyrone Griffin, was a member of the bank Lakeside, which allowed Ty to be surrounded by music constantly. He learned how to play bass, drums, guitar, and the keyboard.

In an article by The Fader, Ty explained how he got his stage name, and why he includes the actual dollar sign in his name. He explained: “My homie Ace just started calling me ‘Dolla Sign’ every time he saw me so I named myself Ty Dolla $ign because you know, I’m young and I’m right. For legal purposes, they had to spell it out. If it was up to me, It would just be Ty with the dollar sign - like my logo.”

In August of 2014, Ty Dolla $ign released a mixtape titled Sign Language who featured rappers like Jeremih, Wiz Khalifa, YG, Yo Gotti and Jay 305. Later in November, he would also release his debut album Free TC.

In February of 2016, Ty Dolla $ign was also featured on Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home”, which reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. In June of 2016, Ty Dolla $ign collaborated with Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Imagine Dragons, Logic, and X Ambassadors for the single “Sucker for Pain” which was featured in the film Suicide Squad.

On October 27th of 2017, he will be releasing his album Beach House 3, a couple days after our Homecoming Concert. His songs are catchy and are perfect for a fun concert with your friends!

The Homecoming Concert lineup is solid with talented artists who rose to fame through hard work in the difficult and complex music industry. Not only are their tunes catchy and fun, but they work hard to pursue what they love to do. They are sure to give one awesome night to U of M students on October 20th. Don’t miss it!
