American Studies Beyond the classroom

An excellent undergraduate program encourages students to actively engage communities outside of the academy and to apply what they have learned to real life. Jessica Hobson, an American studies alumna who now works as an inclusion & community engagement associate at the Minnesota Historical Society, took part in an innovative seminar and field internship program developed with the Minnesota Historical Society during the summer of 2010. She and other participating students received hands-on experience interpreting history as well as an opportunity to visit museums and meet with professionals in Washington D.C.

The benefits of diversified learning

One of the most important lessons that Laura Garvey discovered through her liberal arts education was to never stop learning. Last spring, Laura graduated with a BA in American studies. “The great thing about my time at the University of Minnesota,” Laura says, “was that it gave me a broad skillset.” Her experiences and coursework in American studies gave her the tools she needs to approach problems in creative and innovative ways.
